Castles of Europe


Centuries back at a time when war and violence was the way of life, in the great countryside's of Europe from England and Ireland in the west to Italy and Germany in the east rose the great symbol of medieval power, the Castle. These creations of greed and power were magnificent fortresses built to protect the Noblemen and kings that ruled the lands, and allowed them to reign supreme over their constituents and protect their lands, their people and their way of life.

The varied uses of castles started of as defensive strongholds to protect from invasion and to guard the Noblemen and their subjects to places of worship, torture and as symbols of fear and power. Over centuries these magnificent buildings were built by rulers not only as fortresses to protect themselves from invaders but also as homes and as great repositories of wealth and art collected from countless battles won.

Their great achievements, sometimes even in ruins and some restored to their former glory no live on simple to give us a silent and sometimes gruesome testament to a life often look back upon with awe and respect.
